Are You Committed?

Are You Committed?

When I was a young surfer, my friends and I used to have an all-in attitude to surfing. We learnt to surf on the rugged west coast of Northland and the surf was often big, messy and out of control. Despite the crappy conditions we were committed to going out “no matter what”, while other surfers would wait for the conditions to come right.

One of my friends used to take things one step further. He would put on his wetsuit in the car park and pee in it straight away. If you have ever urinated in a dry wetsuit, you’ll know that you have to immerse yourself in water fairly quickly or else things get unpleasant around your crotch. The surf would be rubbish, but my friend was 100% committed.

When the surf conditions became epic, my friends and I were fit and on form. Other surfers were unfit and off their game. We managed to snag the best waves and surf all day. Other surfers tired quickly and became frustrated. We progressed, others stagnated.

So here’s the point of my story....

How committed are you to kicking your goals for 2020? Are you all in? Or are you 50/50? All-in commitment is a decision to take the plunge no matter what. 50/50 commitment relies on external circumstances to be favourable before you take the plunge.

Just wanting the results isn’t enough. You need to pee in your wetsuit and commit!
